The cat had already claimed the nav console by the time the Harrow Ring took us in, so I had to read the docking numbers off her back while she purred over the dials. Her name was Pell, after the dock master who had handed her to me as a kitten on Ceres Shoals, and she believed the ship was hers. Maybe it was. I only held the licence.

Out past the viewport the nebula had the colours of a sunset someone had decided to keep going, pink bleeding into violet, stars laid over it like sugar on a cake. I had seen it four hundred times and it still made me stop talking. The cargo hold held nineteen glass cases, each with a single red rose inside, kept alive by a cold fog the size of a fist. Brisk Halloran had paid triple to have them delivered to the Meridian garden before its hundredth anniversary, and he had not said why.

The garden clerk, a thin man leaning on a cane, opened the first case himself and then stood very still. He lifted the rose out with his fingers, took a crescent brooch from his coat, gold and chipped at one tip, and fitted it against the stem like a key finding its lock. The fog thinned. The petals stirred. Pell leapt from the console onto the glass and sat there, tail curled, watching him as if she had arranged the whole thing herself. I signed the manifest and didn't ask. Some deliveries are only ever half mine.
