Scales of justice tattoo on the inner wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a pair of balanced scales sits on the inner wrist, with a central post, a crossbar and two hanging pans. The black ink has crisp, even linework with solid fill on the post and pan chains. The pale skin and dark ink stand out against the blurred printed pages of an open book behind it.

Her junior, a nervous boy called Tobias who had never lost a case, kept checking his phone. Margaret did not check hers. She was thinking about the photograph the defence had shown the court on the second day, a kitchen table with two mugs and a torn envelope, and how the prosecution had argued that the envelope proved everything while she had argued that it proved nothing. The usher knocked at ten past eleven. Margaret set the cup down on the windowsill, careful not to let it rattle, and picked up her papers. On the way to the court she passed the brass scales that stood on the landing, the same ones the building had carried since the Victorians, their pans level and empty.
She had always thought the balance was a lie. Justice did not weigh things; it only decided which side to lean on. Tonight, for the first time, she thought that might be the point.
