The relief boat came Tuesday with the paraffin and a key that nobody on the mainland will admit to owning. It is black iron, with a bow shaped like a heart and two plain teeth at the tip, and it was tied to the rail of the lamp-room stair with a length of tarred twine. Mr Okonedo at the station swears it belongs to the chart cupboard, but it doesn't turn in the lock. I have tried the blue cabinet, the log box and the biscuit tin where we keep the matches dry. Nothing.

The gulls have been at the glass all week, and the light has gone round as it always does, regular as a pulse. I find I keep turning the key over in my pocket while I wind the clockwork, feeling for the heart with my thumb the way you used to worry a button on your coat.

Father used to say every lock was a question somebody had forgotten to ask. I thought that was nonsense until the day you walked out of the gate in Hull with your case and no key to come back by. I should have written then. I am writing now, which is the most I can manage from a rock with a ninety-foot tower and a bad knee.

I am sending the key to you, though I can't see what use it is to either of us. If it opens nothing here, perhaps it opens something there. The boat goes Thursday. Mind the loose step by the door.
