Scallop shell on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A single scallop shell is drawn in solid black outline, with radiating ridges fanning out from a hinge at the lower right. The linework is even and unshaded, and the design is filled only by the bare skin. The tattoo sits on the upper arm against a white top and dark trousers, with the frame cropped below the shoulder and above the waist.

Mr Abernethy came up the slipway at low tide with a rucksack, a walking stick and a scallop shell tied to the strap with grey string. He wanted the shell weighed. That summer I ran the ferry booking hut at Port Mairi, so I knew every walker, every dog and every grudge on the island. The orchard behind the hut belonged to my aunt. The apples were coming in heavy, the wasps were drunk on the windfalls, and every afternoon the bell on the pier rang for a boat that never came early.

Abernethy sat on the bench under the trees and told me the shell was his brother's. They had walked the old saints' road together one long summer, collecting a scallop from every village they passed, and the brother had died in Lisbon before he could finish. Abernethy had walked the rest alone. He held the shell up against the sky, and the ridges fanned out from the hinge at the bottom like the spokes of a wheel, the string wound tight where it had worn a groove.

I didn't ask him whether the road had been worth it. I took the shell, rubbed the grit from the hinge with my thumb and gave it back. The next morning the ferry left on time for once, and he was on it, one hand raised against the glare off the water. Behind the hut my aunt was gathering windfalls into a basket, and I remember thinking that the orchard would drop its fruit whether anyone was counting or not.
