The ewe had gone down in the bottom field before dawn, and by the time Tom Hebden reached her the frost had stiffened the grass into little white blades that snapped under his boots. Nell was already kneeling in the muck with one hind leg of a lamb showing and the straw sack split open beside the barn door. She did not look up. "Needle," she said, and he dug in his coat pocket for the packet of gut and the curved steel he kept there for exactly this.

The first lamb came slick and silent, and Nell rubbed it with a fistful of straw until it sneezed and shook its ears. Tom watched her hands, red to the wrist, close the torn sack with two neat stitches that never pulled, the same slanting stitch their grandmother had used on every sack and sleeve in the house. Nell tied it off with her teeth and wiped her mouth on her shoulder. "One," she said, and went to fetch the ewe a bucket of warm water.
The ewe rose, shook herself, and nosed at the wet straw where a second lamb should have been. Snow had started sideways off the moor. Nell kept the tally on the gatepost, a scratch for every lamb born that season, and Tom had been told to hold the knife for it. "Two," he said, when the ewe groaned and the second head appeared. "Wait," said Nell, "it's not out yet," and the lamb came then, all legs and anger.
Nell took the knife from him and cut the second mark beside the first, slanting the same way, the two strokes side by side on the grey wood. The snow filled the groove and made them bright. Tom looked at them and thought that was the whole winter in it: two thin lines, cut at the same angle, both still standing.
