Scar from The Lion King in geometric colour

Geometric · Calf · Colour · Photo

A cartoon lion, identifiable as Scar, snarls across the centre of the design, broken into angular panels of orange, brown, red, yellow and blue. Above, a teal moon sits within a purple and black shape, with two lion silhouettes standing on a dark ridge. The bold, heavy outlines and flat colour fills give the piece a fragmented, graphic look against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The inspector unwraps the second canvas first, the one the dealer told you to keep wrapped, and holds it under the sodium lamp as if it might be contraband in its own right. Orange panels cut against brown, a red muzzle, a yellow sweep of light down one side. Above the face a teal moon sits in a purple sky, and below it two lions stand on a dark ridge, one small beside one tall, neither looking back. "Whose is this?" she asks. "The dealer's," you say, which is true in the way that matters at border posts.

She turns it over, reads the label, turns it back. The snarl is what she keeps returning to, the jaw cracked wide, the eyes sliding sideways as if checking who is watching from the wings. "He looks like he's been left out of something," she says. You tell her the painter always drew him that way, a brother who waited his whole life on the far side of the ridge, cut into pieces because nobody would give him a whole frame. She does not ask who the painter was. Nobody in your line of work asks that twice.

She stamps the manifest, then stops with the ink still on the pad. Across the river a dog barks, and the lamp buzzes overhead. She hands back the lion and sets the moon face-up on the counter, where it catches the light, a flat teal disc against the wet tiles. "Go on," she says. "Mind the ridge. It's steeper than it looks coming down."
