Geometric animal head with foliage

Geometric · Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised animal head built from angular, faceted planes, with two small hexagonal eyes. Fine sketchy black linework overlays the shapes, and the fill uses yellow, orange, teal and blue. A cluster of leaves and a small blue flower sit at the lower left of the design.

Dad had already been out twice before I got the lantern lit, swearing at the hen house door, which had been opened again from the outside and not by any hand of ours. Frost had furred the inside of the stable window so thickly that the yard came through it in pieces: the blue of the water trough, the yellow of the straw bales, a slant of orange from the lamp, all cut into planes as if someone had taken a knife to the morning and left the edges sharp.

The fox was sitting in the hay where the old tack room used to be. I knew it was a fox by the ears before I knew it was anything else, and then by the eyes, two pale rings that caught the lamp as if small hexagonal glass had been set into its head. It did not run. It looked at me the way Gran used to look at a bad card hand, patient and not impressed, and I understood it had been living in the warm end of our barn for a week while we blamed the weasels.

Dad wanted it gone. I said I would deal with it, and I did, though not the way he meant. I left the hen house bolted from the outside, and I raked the dried bramble the sheep had pulled from the hedge, silver with rime, into a heap by the stable door where the fox could reach it.

By March the hens were laying again and nobody had lost a bird. On the last frost of the month I found one corner of the window clear, a small round patch like a thawed coin, and through it the yard looked ordinary again. Only the tracks in the snow by the tack room door, neat and paired and heading off towards the wood, looked like anything I could have drawn.
