Scarecrow and pumpkins harvest design

Colour · Flash

A coloured pencil drawing of a scarecrow-like figure in a wide hat and long brown robe, standing behind a wooden fence with three orange pumpkins in the foreground. A grinning blue ghost floats in a yellow sky on the left, with a green hill and a purple cloudy sky on the right. The shading is soft and layered, with bold dark outlines around the central figure and the pumpkins set within a loose oval composition.

The last pumpkins had to be in the cart before the ghost came down off the hill, Mrs Tulliver said, and Nell believed her because Mrs Tulliver had never once been wrong about weather or gossip. Nell counted them twice anyway. Three orange ones, fat as church bells, sat in the stubble by the fence where Old Wrenna stood with her arms out, her wide hat pulled low over a face of sacking and a red ribbon.

The ghost was already up there in the yellow end of the sky, grinning the way a man grins when he has lost a bet and means to win the next one. It had drifted over the ridge every October since Nell was small, and every October it asked the same question of the scarecrow: what would she take for a night off? Wrenna never answered. She only stood in her long brown robe and let the wind pull at the hem until it sounded like someone turning pages.

Nell tried to lift the first pumpkin alone and went over backwards into the wet grass. The fence rail splintered under her elbow. When she looked up, the ghost had come down low over the hedge, and its grin was closer than it had any right to be. Wrenna's striped sleeve, the one stitched from an old jumper of Nell's grandad's, caught the moonlight. Without a word the scarecrow lifted one hand and offered the ghost the smallest pumpkin, carved already with a crooked smile that matched its own.

In the morning the cart was full and the field was bare. The ghost had gone back over the purple ridge with its lantern, and Nell found a single strand of yellow wool snagged on the fence post, where Wrenna's hand had been.
