Scissors and banners with flowers design
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A flat drawing of a pair of red and purple scissors crossed through three pale banners with black lettering. The outlines are bold and even, with simple solid fills and small shadows under the banners. The mint background is covered with white outlined flowers and small blossoms, and the scissors and banners are the main colourful focus.

Dear Mags,

You will laugh, but the tailor's shears have gone missing again and Mr Pellow has blamed me, the way he blames me for the weather. I found them at last in the hem of Lady Carrow's green travelling coat, where they had been snipping the thread of her own nerves, I suppose. I did not say so. I only held them up in the lamplight and asked whether she wanted her cuffs taken in or let out, and she went as pink as the ribbon on her bonnet.
The fair has pitched on the common beyond the chapel, and every stall is strung with bunting and paper roses that the wind keeps trying to carry off. Last night I walked the lanes with the scissors in my apron pocket, because I cannot bear to leave them with Pellow, and I met a boy selling cut-paper flowers from a tray. He had a banner painted on a board, DON'T LOSE YOUR WAY, and under it, smaller, SWEETHEART, which I thought was a dreadful thing to write on a board and a lovely thing to be called by a stranger.
I gave him a penny for a violet and he gave me back a rose. I have pinned it inside my bodice where the shears used to sit, and I do not think I shall lose my way. Only the shears, I expect, and then I shall find them in somebody's hem again.
Your loving friend, Edie
