Small crescent moon on inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small crescent moon tattoo sits on the inside of a wrist, with the hand resting palm up on a black and cream floral bedsheet. The moon is drawn with thin dark outlines and light grey shading along its curve. The ink is black and grey, while the sage green nail polish and shell ring are the only other notable colours in the frame.

Nobody wanted the moon cloth any more. It hung above the centre ring of Haddon's Travelling Circus like a tired sail, grey at the hem where the damp had got into the weave, and when the bank's man came to count what was worth selling he walked straight under it and called it rubbish. I didn't argue. I had been back-flyer for nine seasons and I knew a dying act when I stood under one.

Dora Haddon found me on the wagon steps that night with a tin of enamel and a brush. "You'll not mend that with paint," she said. "I'm not mending it," I told her. "I'm marking it." Years before, the cloth had been cut to show a crescent the size of a man's outstretched arm, lit from below by the lamp-man, and every child in the front rows had shouted when the moon rose over the trapeze. Dora had sold the lamp in March to pay the farrier. I took a scrap of the old white canvas and painted a thin curve in black and grey, shading the far edge so it read like shadow on a real moon.

In the morning the bank's man stopped under the cloth again, squinted, and asked what the little crescent in the corner was supposed to be. "That's the moon," Dora said, not looking up from her ledger. "The rest is only cloth."

He went off to the lorry with his clipboard and left the tent standing. We struck it in November and folded the moon in tissue paper, crescent uppermost, so it would be the first thing we saw when we unpacked in the spring.
