Small dots and circle symbol on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with glossy black almond-shaped nails rests on a bare leg, with a white sneaker and sock visible in the background. Three tiny dots sit on the side of the middle finger, and a small circular symbol with an inner curved line is inked on the ring finger. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, and the hand fills the right of the frame against a plain light fabric.

The surveyor left me a brass key on a bootlace, a tin of black Indian ink and a list of rooms I was not to touch. Mrs Pryce at the farm below the keep counted her ewes through the gate twice each morning, as if the ruin might walk off with one. I was twenty-three and had come to draw the curtain wall for a county grant nobody expected to be paid.

The postern sat behind the collapsed chapel, an arch so low I had to crouch. Above the keystone someone had scratched three small dots in a row, and beneath them a ring with a curved stroke across its lower half, the sort of mark a mason uses to say this stone turns. The surveyor's notes called them tally marks and nothing more. I copied them into my book, then went in anyway, because the torch showed steps going down.
At the bottom was a well with the water gone to black glass, and set into the side a circular stone, cold as a sink, that moved under my palm like a cheap clock. Behind it lay a niche with a bundle of hazel tallies bound in tarred cord. Each notch was a day. The first was cut in 1642, the year the garrison walked out with the gate still barred, and the notches ran in sets of three down the length of the wood.
I counted them by torchlight until my fingers ached. There were three hundred and six sets, and the last had been cut that spring, the wood still pale where the knife had gone in. Under them, in the same careful hand as my list, someone had written: the gate is open now, you may stop counting. Then I climbed back up, and by the arch I found I had already inked that ring onto the cover of my notebook, a small black circle that would not come out in the rain.
