Script and symbol tattoos on wrists and ear
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
This collage shows several close-up photographs of separate tattoos: a feather behind an ear, an infinity sign with a feather, a key, an anchor with chain, and a number of script phrases on wrists and forearms. The linework is thin and delicate, with fine script lettering and simple shading in the feather and key. The ink is black throughout, arranged in a grid of mismatched photo tiles.

Mags had counted the pears twice before she noticed the ladder was missing its top rung. Late August in the Hadley orchard meant wasps in the windfalls and cider sweetening the air from the press shed, and her brother Tom was somewhere down the far row shouting at a dog that wanted his lunch.

In the cellar she found the tin. Inside, wrapped in a tea towel gone the colour of weak tea, lay eleven keys, each with a luggage tag tied on in their father's square capitals: SHED, GATE, BANK, and one that read only HONESTY, though the lock it fitted had been sold with the old cider mill in 1987. Under the keys lay a grey feather pressed flat between two sheets of the Ledbury Gazette. Mags turned it over and felt a small, stupid urge to laugh.
Tom found her at the bottom of the orchard, the HONESTY key in her fist. "That's for nothing," he said. "Dad said it was for the thing you'd forgotten to lock." They walked the gate chain together, its links rusted to the colour of old pears, and she fitted the key to the padlock out of habit. It did not turn. Neither of them seemed surprised.
She tied the feather to the chain with a length of baling twine, the tag swinging beside it, and left the gate as it was. Down the lane a van hooted twice and the wasps went on with the windfalls.
