"Love is enough" script on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two photographs show the words love is enough written in a thin, joined-up handwritten script across the forearm. The linework is fine and even, with the word enough running down and across the lower part of the arm. The ink is black and the background is plain skin, with a shop or room setting and a white top visible in the wider shot.

Dear Ruan,

The snow shut the Hesk Col on Tuesday, so the carrier left your parcel at the foot of the track with the mule and a note in Mrs Pell's loopy hand saying the boots were the wrong size. I have put them by the stove to dry, which is where all the things I cannot send you seem to end up. The hut smells of wet wool and paraffin. I have counted the tins twice. There is enough flour until March, enough tea if we are careful, and enough kindling if you do not mind me burning the bench you carved.
I know what you will say about the money. You will say we could have sold the flock in the autumn and gone down to the town with the others, and you will be right, and I will still be sitting here with my feet against the grate. The wind comes over the top in the evenings and sounds like someone trying a door. Last night I got up to see who it was and there was only the cairn and the moon on the snow.
Here is the thing I meant to say before you left. I was angry because I thought you were choosing the road over me. But I have sat up here long enough to see that the road is only the road. Love is enough, my mother used to say, usually when the kettle had boiled dry and somebody needed to make the tea anyway. I used to think she meant it as a comfort. Now I think she meant it as a plain fact, like weather.
Come back when the pass opens. Bring the boots if they fit. I will have the stove going, and I will have written this out properly on the good paper, so you can read it at the table with your hat still on. The last line I cannot get right. I have tried six times. Every time the nib runs out before the word is finished.
