Tiny Eiffel tower, anchor and checkmark on wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A three-panel collage of very small tattoos on the wrist. The left panel shows a tiny black Eiffel Tower held beside a teal phone, the top right shows a small reddish-brown anchor on the inner wrist, and the bottom right shows a small dark checkmark near the edge of denim. The linework is thin and simple, with minimal shading, and the photographs have a warm, faded filter.

The pickers came up the hill every August with their baskets and their radios, and every August old Mrs Pryce at the end of Quarry Lane sent her grandson down with a tin of windfalls and a list. This year the list had a new line at the bottom in her wobbling capitals: ONE MORE BASKET FOR THE PARIS WOMAN.

Nobody in Ledbury had heard of a Paris woman. Eddie Tovey, who was seventeen and had been sent to fetch the tin, decided she must be the one who had come to rent the cottage by the orchard gate. He found her on the ladder at the far end of the Bramley rows, a chalk-smudged thumb pressed to the trunk, sketching something small on the bark with a stub of pencil. When she came down she said her name was Odile and that the apples here were the only things she had ever seen that looked as if they were waiting for permission.
They filled the basket together. Odile talked about a tower she had once climbed, and an anchor her father kept on a nail in his shed, and a tick she made beside every job she finished, though she had never finished much. Eddie thought she was mad. Then she tipped the last of the Russets into his hands and showed him the underside of her wrist, where three marks sat one above the other like a small, stubborn family.
When he got back to Quarry Lane, the tin was empty and the note was gone. Mrs Pryce only smiled and said the Paris woman always left her ticks behind.
