Script iloveyou on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A small black script tattoo reading iloveyou sits on the upper shoulder near the collarbone, with the lettering running diagonally upwards. The linework is thin and even, with the lettering solid black and slightly softened at the edges. The background is dark and out of focus, so the skin and tattoo stand out against it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every evening on Scarrow Head, old Tobias Venn climbed the iron stairs to light the lamp, and every evening his daughter Maud stood on the cliff path with a shawl pulled tight and watched for the boats. The fleet had gone out at dawn and would not come home until the tide turned, and nobody on the headland read the sky the way Maud could.

One night the fog came in thick as wool. Tobias lit the great lamp and its beam went round and round, but the fog swallowed it before it reached the water. Maud ran to the boathouse, found a tin of white paint and a stiff brush, and went down the wet steps to the rocks below the light, where the spray could reach. She painted the word on the black stone in letters as tall as a man, all lowercase and joined together, iloveyou, and when it was finished she climbed back up and stood beside her father.

"They can't read a word in fog," Tobias said.

"They don't need to read it," Maud said. "They only need to know somebody is saying it."

The boats came in around midnight, one after another, steering by the foghorn and the faint smudge of white below the cliff. The last to round the point was her brother's, and he brought it in close to the rocks, closer than any man on Scarrow would have dared, until he could read every letter. When he stepped onto the slipway he looked up at the headland, and he said nothing at all, which was how the men of Scarrow had always said the important things.
