Script lettering across both feet
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two words-based script tattoos sit across the tops of both feet, split into two lines of flowing lettering on each side. The letters use bold, shaded strokes with fine hairline flourishes and swirling tails that connect the words. The image is shot close and straight on against a dark background, with soft even lighting that shows the shading clearly.

The band is already tuning when you come through the side door of the Marine Palais, and the floor smells of Brylcreem, wet wool and the sea. Your sister Ruth has saved you the chair by the radiator, the way she always does, and she gives you the look that means Frank Cole has been asking after you again. He is at the pillar by the bar with his hat in his hands, the same spot he has stood every Saturday since the spring. You let him cross the floor before you look up, because that is the only power a girl from Cliff Road has in 1953.

He wants you to go to Toronto with him in the autumn. He has a cousin with a cabinet works and a room above it, and he talks about the lake as if it were a kind of promise. You tell him you have a mother who cannot climb the stairs and a shop that needs two pairs of hands. He doesn't argue. He just nods at your shoes, the good ones you have resoled three times, and says that a man can be left a long time with a thing he never got to finish. Then the trumpet comes in and he is gone into the crowd, and you are left with the taste of peppermint and the knowledge that you could have said something else.
You dance the next three numbers with Ruth's brother, who steps on everyone and apologises to the drummer. Near midnight the lights go low and the last waltz begins. You stay on the floor long after the chairs have been stacked, turning slowly under the chandelier with the cleaner's broom leaning against the wall. Outside, the tide is coming in over the groynes, and tomorrow you will open the shop and sew the hem of a stranger's wedding dress. You will not be on any boat. You tie the laces of your shoes, and the boards take your weight exactly as they always have.
