Script lettering across two fingers

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand with pale pink-white nails rests on light brown hair, with the fingers angled toward the lower left of the frame. Thin black script lettering runs along the length of the middle finger, with a smaller script mark on the index finger. The ink is dark grey-black on warm skin, and the soft lilac background keeps the focus on the fingers.

Dear Marjorie, the Palais has gone to the dogs since you left, though Mr Pryce swears the sprung floor is as good as ever. Last Saturday the band played that waltz with the slow turn in the middle, and I stood by the cloakroom counting coats and thinking of you pinning your hair up in the back room, telling me I'd never keep a partner if I kept looking at the door.

Your cousin Dennis came in with the lads from the boatyard. He had a fresh line of ink on his middle finger, small and grey, a name written out in a loopy hand that I won't repeat in case you tease him about it. He spent the whole evening holding that hand up to the lamps as if the letters might fade. I told him they wouldn't, and he said that was rather the point. Then he asked me to dance, and I stepped on his good shoes twice, which I think pleased him more than anything.

The turn came in the last reel. Mr Pryce had the lights down low and the whole floor became one slow circle, and for a minute I forgot the coats entirely. When the band packed up, Dennis walked me to the tram stop and said he'd write to you care of the post office in Ryde. I thought you should know he's sweet on nobody, which is a rare thing for a man his age.

Write back soon and tell me what the city dances are like. Tell me whether anyone there counts the coats. I'll keep your ribbon in the drawer by the till until you're home to claim it, and I'll not give it to anyone who asks nicely.

Yours in haste, Edie
