Small heart outline on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small, single heart outline is tattooed on the side of a finger, drawn in thin grey-black linework with no shading. Two hands rest on a grey knit fabric, and the pale nails and a red-painted nail on the other hand are visible. The heart sits near the centre of the frame and is clearly in focus.

The lamp room at Hollin Pit smelled of paraffin and wet wool, and my father would let no one else fill his lamp. I was nine the first time he let me stand beside him while the men queued at the hatch, their tin checks clicking on the board like teeth.

While he waited, I traced a heart in the grime on the window of the drying cabinet, one finger slow and careful, the way Mam drew hearts in the steam on the kitchen glass. The shift deputy, Mr Oakes, saw it and laughed, and so did the men behind us. My father didn't laugh. He only looked at the heart for a long moment, then said, leave it, pet, somebody will want to see it when they come up.

The whistle went at half past two, and the cage was late. Mam stood at the pit gates with her coat over her nightdress while the rescue men went in and out. When the lamps came back up the line, my father's was among them, and I saw that the window of the drying cabinet had been wiped clean by somebody's rag except for one small grey shape near the bottom corner, faint as a thumbprint on a bus window.

They never did wipe it off. Nobody at Hollin would touch a thing my father asked them to leave, and when the pit closed I took the glass from the old cabinet home in a sack. I still have it on the windowsill above the sink. Some mornings the light comes through it at the right angle, and there is my heart, too small to mean anything to anyone but the two of us.
