Spark script on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A cursive script word, spark, is drawn in thin black linework across the side of the torso, just below the armpit. The lettering has a loose, flowing hand with a long tail on the final letter, and it is shaded in solid black ink with no colour. The subject wears a white sleeveless top, and the warm, soft-focus background keeps attention on the tattoo.

Dear Hannah, the lamp at Scarrow Point failed again on Tuesday, and Father swore at the wick until the gulls went quiet. I have taken over the nightly trimming since. You would laugh to see me, sleeves rolled, soot up to my wrists, hair smelling of paraffin no matter how many times I wash it in the rain barrel.

The mail boat came Thursday with your parcel. The tin of barley sugar was crushed flat, but the letter inside was whole, and I read it three times on the slipway while the boatman waited for his coffee. You write that the city has swallowed you up and you cannot find your way back to yourself. I understand it better than you think. Some nights I stand at the gallery rail and feel like a spent match.
Then I remember what Grandmother used to say when the range would not catch in winter. She would crouch by the grate with her cheek nearly on the iron, blow once, softly, and say, there, you only need one spark and the rest will follow. I thought she was talking about coal. I am no longer certain.
I have written the word on the back of your envelope so you will have it in your own hand. Keep it somewhere you can reach without thinking. Come home at the solstice if you can bear the crossing. The lamp will be lit, and I will have the kettle on.
All my love, Ruth.
