The relief boat came on Tuesday in a thin rain, and the man who brought the paraffin had nothing for me but the Western Mail and a sack of onions gone soft in the wet. I have read the paper twice and eaten the onions. There is nothing else on this rock but the light, the gulls, and my own handwriting going smaller on every page.

Mr Penhale says the Trinity House men will not come until the spring gales have finished with us, so I am writing now and will fold this in with the next batch for the mainland post. Tell Mother the lamp is trimmed and burning clean. Tell her I have kept the wick the way Father showed me, low at first, then up when the fog rolls in off the bay.

I have a request, and you will think it foolish. When you write, put something in the envelope that is not news. A pressed fern, a button, a ribbon from the bakery counter. Anything that has passed through your hands. I have started listening for the boat the way Father listened for the bell buoy, and I want something to hold while I wait.

Send me something small, and send it before the light goes out of the sky again.
