Script lettering reading poema on wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand raised against a blurred green background, showing the inner wrist. The word poema is written in thin, flowing black script with a slight slant and a looped descender on the p. The ink is uniform and crisp, and the lettering sits centrally on the wrist with plenty of surrounding skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ink had barely settled when Marisol stopped trying to explain it to her mother over the telephone. The word sat on the inside of her wrist in thin black script, and every time she lifted a teacup it leaned a little to the left, as if it wanted to see what she was reading. Poema. Her grandfather had written it on the back of every envelope he sent from Valparaíso, always the same word, never a sentence, as though the single word were a whole letter folded small.

She had found his last envelope in a shoebox at the market stall where her cousin sold secondhand records. Rain was coming down on the tin awning in that particular way that makes shoppers stand closer together. Between a box of cracked vinyl and a jar of loose buttons she unfolded the paper and read the one word again. Her cousin looked over her shoulder and said it was probably nothing, a habit, a joke between two old men.

She did not believe that. A poem was not a thing you wrote on the back of a letter by accident. It was an instruction, or a promise to keep talking when the sentences ran out.

When the rain eased she walked to the studio on Cable Street with the envelope in her coat pocket. The artist asked her what she wanted and she said only the word, nothing else, and let him draw the loop on the p himself. Afterwards she held her wrist up to the grey light of the window and read it slowly, the way her grandfather had taught her to read anything he cared about.
