Small script line tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a forearm and hand held against a plain light grey background. A small handwritten script line in black ink runs along the forearm, reading what appears to be in omnia paratus. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or colour, and the text sits horizontally across the middle of the arm.

The letter reached Ardcombe on the Tuesday boat, folded twice and smelling of coal smoke. Maud Pellow read it standing at the chandlery counter, then again sitting on a coil of rope, because the first reading had not made the words any kinder.

Her son Tobias had gone out to the Skerries lighthouse in the spring to keep the lamp for the old keeper, Ambrose Dunn, who had promised to teach him the tides and the brass. Now Dunn was dead of a cough and the lamp was Tobias's. The letter said only that the storm had come in off the bar at dusk, that the lantern glass had cracked, and that he had kept the light burning until dawn with his own coat stuffed into the frame. He wrote that he was well. He wrote that the motto above the lighthouse door had made him laugh the first night, because it was painted in letters the height of a man and the paint had run, so that it read more like a dare than a promise.
Maud did not laugh. She fetched the good ink from the drawer under the till, the blue-black she saved for invoices from the Crown, and wrote on the back of his letter in her own small slanted hand. She wrote the old words the way her husband used to say them, in the voice of someone who had already decided: in omnia paratus. Ready for anything, and not especially pleased about it.
She sealed it with wax, paid the boatman a penny extra, and watched the tender pull away from the slip. Past the bar a light was swinging, and she told herself it was his.
