Red heart and love script behind the ear
Lettering · Neck · Mixed · Photo
A red outlined heart with dotted line accents sits behind the ear, with a black cursive word reading love running down beneath it. The linework is fine and even, with the script shaded solid black and the heart outlined in red. The composition is close and angled, with the ear and a small stud earring visible beside the design.

Ada had the brush between her teeth when Mr Pryce came up the ladder to tell her the heart was wrong. "Too fancy," he said, squinting at the outline she'd drawn in red on the back wall of the Wrenmouth Palais. "Dancers want a heart they can read from the door, not a lace hanky."

She didn't argue. She had learned on the pier signs that men who paid by the hour liked to be agreed with, and she had a tin of gold leaf in her apron pocket she meant to use anyway. Below the heart she lettered the word in a looping hand, the L curling back on itself like a ribbon left on a chair, and shaded the strokes solid so they'd hold under the chandeliers. The dots she set along the inner curve one at a time, a breath between each, the way her mother had pricked a hem so the pleats would stay.
By the Saturday the hall was full and the band had started a slow foxtrot. Pryce stood at the cloakroom counting coats and didn't look up when Ada came down the ladder with paint on her cuffs. He only said the back wall looked fine, and asked whether she'd be wanting her wages in cash or by cheque.
She went out through the side door into the wet car park and stood under the lamp, looking back through the glass at the couples turning. Inside, the red heart caught the spin of the mirror ball and broke into a dozen small sparks along its dotted edge, and for once nobody needed to read the word to know what it said.
