Script love tattoo on the top of a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A single black script word reading love sits on the top of a bare foot, with a thin crossing stroke running through the lettering. The linework is fine and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The foot is centred against a dark leather surface, with the tattoo set just below the toes.

Dear Tom, the loft smells of tar and wet canvas today, and Mr Pardoe has taken the big jib off its hook to mend the seam the wind tore on Thursday. I have the palm strapped to my left hand and the waxed thread running through the needle in my right, and I keep thinking about the way you said the word looked like a knot a man ties without looking at his hands.

The harbour bell has been ringing since dawn for the fleet going out past the breakwater. Mrs Quayle's gulls are fighting over the fish heads by the slip, and the Marigold's new mainsail is folded on the bench beside me, still stiff from the dye. Mr Pardoe says a sail should never carry a word it can't shake off in the wash, but I stitched one into the storm sail anyway, low on the clew where nobody looks unless they're hauling the corner tight.
He saw it on Tuesday and said nothing for almost an hour. Then he sat down beside me, took the thread from my fingers and pulled the cross stroke through the middle of the letters until it sat flat and true. He told me the sea would have the sail long before the stitching gave out, and that was the closest he has ever come to saying yes.
The Marigold goes out on the morning tide. If you ever see her storm sail lifting above the grey water, look low on the corner where the red thread crosses the word. Then tell me what you think it says, and I will tell you whether you are right.
