Arrow tattoo on the top of a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small black arrow runs diagonally across the top of a bare foot, with its point aimed towards the little toe and its feathered fletching near the ankle side. The linework is thin and even, and the design is solid black ink with no shading. The plain, light skin and dark leather surface behind the foot give the small tattoo strong contrast.

Sit down, the lot of you, and keep your feet off the good chairs. The band's on its break and I've got till the dancing starts again. This is about Eunice Pardoe, who ran the Pavilion ballroom at Shelsley Bay the summer the gulls stole the bunting. She could waltz a man in a straight line across a floor forty yards long, and she never once looked down to see where she was putting her feet.

One wet Thursday a tinsmith's apprentice called Tobias Quayle came in asking for her, having been told she could fix anything with a hinge or a heart. He had an arrow he'd carved from ash, the fletching made of three goose feathers bound with waxed thread, and he said he'd shot it from the harbour wall across to the Pavilion roof, and the wind had carried it true to the door. Eunice took it off him, turned it over, and said the feathers were the wrong way round for anything with a proper flight. Then she laughed and asked him to dance.

Here's the turn, and then I'll shut my mouth. Years later, when Tobias had gone off to the mines and Eunice had gone grey, she told the story to her granddaughter with the arrow point aimed at the floor. She said the arrow was never meant to land anywhere. It was meant to show you which way you were already leaning, and to keep you leaning that way until the music changed.

Now that's the lot. Off you go, mind the step by the door, it's loose.
