Dear Marjorie, you will never guess what the officer at Dover did with my Victoria sponge on Tuesday. We were third in the queue, the van packed with tins for your Christmas order, and he lifted the lid of the top one and announced, very solemnly, that strawberries do not cross the Channel. I told him the red was raspberry jam from Mother's copper pan, older than his uniform. He didn't smile. He pulled on blue gloves and turned the slice over with a plastic knife like a man reading a card he suspected of being forged.

Then he found the loops. I had piped them in black icing on the paper beneath, a little pair of figures of eight, the way I always do for the twins. He asked what they meant. I said they meant the cake was for two people who had argued since Easter and still wanted the same slice. He looked at the tin, then at the lorries stacking up behind us, and something in his face went soft and careful, the way it does when a child shows you a drawing of the house.

He stamped the form without another word and wrote across the bottom in capitals: SPONGE, ONE SLICE, SENTIMENTAL. I have the carbon copy here on the kitchen table beside the teapot. Come and see it when you visit, and bring the good knife, because I am not cutting it for anyone else.
