Infinity symbol with script on ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a single infinity symbol tattooed on the side of a torso, with three small script-like characters sitting inside its right loop. The linework is thin and the loop has soft grey shading that gives it some depth. The skin is pale with bright light falling from the right, and the top and bottom edges show a navel area and the waistband of denim.

The corridor bent back on itself for the third time before Ruth admitted she had lost the way, and the ring kept turning under our boots as if it had never heard of an end. We had been walking loops since the seal failed on Spindle Four. The amber lights kept sending us round to the same cargo bay, and nobody on the crew could say which loop we were on.

The marks were still there when we reached the bay again: three small strokes set inside a figure eight someone had painted over the hatch in the early years. Ruth said the surveyors used it to mean return. Tomas said it was a hymn number from some sect that left before the ring was built. I stopped arguing and pressed my glove against the paint, which was dry and cold.
We found the old crew's ledger in the spare locker, wrapped in oilcloth. Its last page was a list of names, and beside each one sat one of those three strokes. Forty-one of them. Underneath, in a looser hand, someone had written: we go round so the children can walk straight. The entry after that was blank.
Ruth took the chalk from her pocket and drew a fourth stroke beside our own names at the foot of the page. Then she pressed the ledger flat against the hatch. For a long moment nothing happened, and then the lock let out a sigh and the door slid open onto a corridor that ran, for once, in a straight line.
