Script quote across a shoulder

Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black handwritten script tattoo reading "I am enough the way I am..." across the upper shoulder and collarbone area. The linework is thin and even, with soft grey shading where the ink settles into the skin. The frame is tightly cropped to the shoulder, neck and dark hair, with a grey top at the bottom edge and a blurred room behind.

The girl arrived on the last ferry in October, carrying a carpet bag and a cardboard case tied with string. She apologised for the rain, for the bell, for the lateness of the hour, for having brought only two dresses. Mrs Penhallow said nothing. She showed her the room over the harbour, the bed with the iron foot, the jug of cold water, and left her to it.

Every morning for a week the girl came down to breakfast and apologised for the porridge. Then on the eighth day she stood in the scullery doorway with flour on her hands and read the words aloud, slowly, the way a child reads a sign in a foreign language. "Who wrote that?"

"My mother," said Mrs Penhallow, "who was told the same thing by a drunk sailor in 1911, and believed him for once."

The girl laughed for the first time, and the sound filled the small kitchen. Mrs Penhallow kept kneading her dough and let the silence work, the way the tide does, until the girl asked if she might stay on through the winter and help with the bread.
