Script quote across the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
Two lines of black cursive script read Take me as I am or watch me as I go across the skin. The letters have smooth, solid black ink with clean edges and a slight upward slant to the second line. The photo is taken straight on with even lighting and a plain skin-toned background.

Dear Tom,

Mum says you have stopped writing to her, so I am putting my news in this one and you can read it to yourself or not. The Starlight had its new band in on Saturday, six men from Leeds in matching waistcoats, and the bandleader, a long thin fellow called Mr Oakes, has painted a sign for the back of the stage. It says TAKE ME AS I AM OR WATCH ME AS I GO in curly letters that drip a little where he ran out of paint. Half the girls think it is a come-on. The other half think it is a warning. I think he simply could not decide, which is how most of us end up.
Dad would have hated the whole evening. Nobody paid attention to the jive competition except me, and I came third with Walter Pike, who trod on my left foot twice and apologised both times as though it was my fault for being in the way. We laughed about it on the steps afterwards. He is a clerk at the gasworks and he still says pardon when he bumps a chair.
In the last dance the band played slow and the sign stayed up above them, dripping in the lamplight. Walter asked if I would dance with him properly, not for the prize. I said yes before I could think about what Mum would say. So you see, I am being taken as I am, which is a comfort, and I am watching myself go, which is rather more frightening.
Write back, even if it is only a postcard of the pier.
Your loving sister, Nell
