Script quote along the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
Two lines of black cursive script run across the skin, reading Take me as I am on the upper line and or watch me as I go below it. The letters have even, medium-weight linework with soft grey shading at the edges. The text is set slightly diagonally across a plain area of skin with no other elements in the frame.

Dear Nell,

The bus from Ashford dropped me at the crossroads outside Sallow Mere at half past four, and the driver would not wait while I found my glasses. You always said I'd leave something behind. This time it was the good umbrella and most of my patience. Your mother has the kettle on and has not once asked about the man from the council, which means she has heard all of it from Mrs Pargeter already.
I went through the box you left in the loft. Your handwriting on the lid, your bad spelling on the tags, a jar of buttons nobody has sorted since 1979. Under the buttons was the notebook with the two lines copied out in pencil, pressed so hard the paper dented. Take me as I am, or watch me as I go. I thought at first it was a hymn, then a bit of a song you liked, but it sits on the inside cover like a dare.
So I am sitting in the front room with the rain on the glass, not taking anything, not going anywhere yet. Tell me which one you meant. I will wait until the kettle's cold if I have to.
Love, Ruth
