Script quote and anchor on a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black script quote runs across the side of a foot in two lines, with a small solid anchor to the right of the words. The linework is fine and even, with the lettering set in a flowing hand and little or no shading. The ink is black on pale skin, and the close framing keeps the tattoo as the clear focus against a light green surface.

Dear Tom, the rain has been coming sideways across the fish market since Tuesday, and Mrs Okafor's awning has torn again, so you'll forgive the state of this paper. I'm writing it on the back of a crate lid with the pencil you left in the tin.

The stall is still standing, which I didn't expect. When the gale took the north pier on Thursday night the whole row of tables went over like dominoes, and I stood in the car park at six in the morning counting boxes of hake that had gone to the gulls. Your father's old scales were lying in the mud. I dried them on my coat and set them back on the slab, and Ruth from the flower stall brought me a flask of tea without a word, which is how I knew she'd been crying.
I found the card you pinned up in March, the one with the line you copied from the calendar in the chandlery. Life's roughest storms prove the strength of our anchors. I thought it was soppy when you put it up. Standing in the wet with the iron still in my hand, I thought it was the only true thing on that whole wall.
So I'm not closing. Come home on the Sunday train, bring your good boots, and help me restack the crates. The rain will stop eventually. It always does, and then we'll be the ones still here.
