Script quote across the upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of a woman's upper back, with her dark hair pulled to one side and a white lace top with a deep V neckline. The tattoo is a two-line script quote, reading lights will guide you home, in fine, even black linework with soft shading. The text sits centrally across the upper back against plain skin, with the lace top framing the design.

Dear Mags, the paraffin lamp in the gallery has finally gone out for good, and I have stopped pretending the cold is my knees. The relief boat came over on Tuesday with its bow full of gulls and a crate of tinned peaches for the wife, who has never once asked for peaches. I told the boatman you were the one who should be out here, you with your hands for wicks and your patience with the brass. He laughed and said the mainland doesn't want a lighthouse keeper's widow for a job, and I told him she's not a widow, she's just a woman who married a fool.

There is a carving on the lintel of the lamp room that I cut myself, the first winter, with a chisel borrowed off Dougal. It's only letters, the sort you'd put on a grave if you had no stone to spare. Lights will guide you home. I thought it sounded wise when I was twenty-six and wanted badly to sound wise. Now it reads to me like a promise a man makes when he is not sure he can keep the lamp lit.
The boat leaves at six tomorrow and I shall be on it. I have left the oil cans in a row by the door, filled, labelled in pencil, the way you taught me to leave a thing for whoever comes after. If the new man asks why the lintel says what it says, tell him the words were true enough for the keeper who cut them, and that a light only has to be seen once a night by someone who is looking. Yours, always, Tom.
