You are the last one up the ladder when the Kittiwake Lass begins to list, and the skipper's wife is already on the quay in her oilskin, shouting the words at the sea as if it owed her money. She painted them on the wheelhouse door herself, in brushed letters that run down the panel in a column, and every man in the fleet knows them before he knows his own children's birthdays. GOD IS WITHIN HER, SHE WILL NOT FALL. Nobody has ever asked whether she meant the boat.

The swell comes over the bow at four in the morning off the Dogger edge, and you spend the next hour hauling a net that wants to take the whole stern down with it. Your hands stop feeling like yours. Somewhere below, the engine coughs, catches, coughs again. The skipper, a man called Abel Strang who has never once in your acquaintance raised his voice, stands at the wheel and hums under his breath. After a while you realise it is a hymn, and that he is counting the waves in time with it.

When you finally limp back through the harbour mouth at dawn, the gulls are already fighting over the offal and Hester is standing exactly where she stood the day you left. She does not run to the boat. She waits until the rope is fast, then walks down the slip, looks at the cracked rail and the torn sail, and says, "Well. She held." You never learn whether she means the vessel or the crew, and in the end you decide it does not matter which.
