Psalm 46:5 script quote across the upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the upper back of a person with long dark hair falling over one shoulder. The tattoo is a thin, handwritten script reading God is within her, she will not fall, with Psalm 46:5 set on a line below and to the right. The lettering is in a single dark ink against warm skin tones, with a zebra print backdrop behind the hair.

Dear Nell, the Maud came in on Thursday with the nets full and no Tom aboard, which is how I knew before Harold Pike opened his mouth. He took his cap off the way you would at a graveside, and I thanked him for it, because you cannot hold a man's cap against him. I have been sitting at the kitchen table since with your letter from March, the one with the blot where you pressed your thumb, and I have read the line you copied out for me so many times the paper has gone soft as cloth.

You wrote that the minister at Sheringham had preached on the forty-sixth psalm, the one about the mountains being carried into the sea, and that you had thought of me. I laughed at that, a proper laugh, because you always did think of me when the sermons turned to storms. God is within her, she will not fall. You underlined it twice in pencil. I have taken to saying it under my breath when the kettle is slow or the lamp on the quay goes out, and the words sit in my mouth like a good biscuit.
Tom would have scoffed at the whole business. He thought hymns were for people who had never been out past the buoy. Yet on the morning he left, he stood in the scullery with his oilskins half on and said the words back to me as if he were reading a shipping notice, and then he kissed me hard and went down the steps before I could tell him he had got the second half wrong.
So I am not falling, not yet, though the floor of this house tilts some days. I have ordered a stone for the churchyard with the same line cut into it, and the mason asked if I wanted the verse number too. I said yes. Some things a person ought to be able to find again, even in the dark. Write soon, and tell the girls to mind the coal. Your loving sister, Ada.
