Script quote across upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a woman's bare upper back, with her blonde hair falling forward over the shoulders. Two lines of black cursive script sit across the upper back between the shoulder blades, with fine, even linework. The plain pale wall behind keeps the focus on the tattoo and the skin.

It was Agnes who had chalked the words on the slate above the stove, the spring my brother Tom went under off the Carrick ledge. She wrote them small, in her careful copperplate, and the boatman who brought the post read them aloud before I could stop him. 'I mourn for those who never knew you,' he said, like a hymn. I told him it was a line from a book Tom never read.
Tom had been a fool about boats and a worse one about women, and nobody on the mainland had known him well enough to be sorry except the two of us. So who was the line for? Agnes said it was for the ones who would hear of him from a newspaper and think him a stranger, the ones who would never get the chance to be let down by him. I thought that was a hard thing to say over a drowned man. I think now she meant it kindly.
The new keeper's boy climbed up with the coal that afternoon and asked what the writing meant. I wiped the slate clean, then trimmed the wick, and the beam swung out over water that nobody on it would ever be able to name. 'It means keep the light on,' I said, and I did.
