Script quote on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A thin, cursive script quote runs diagonally across the upper back, rising from the shoulder blade towards the neck. The linework is fine and even, rendered in dark ink with no shading. The photograph is taken from behind, so only the back of the head and hair are visible, against a blurred, light background.

Dear Mags, the gull came back to the gallery rail again this morning with a ribbon of blue twine knotted round one leg, the same one you tied there in April. I've stopped trying to catch him. He's clever enough to keep his distance, and I'm too old to chase birds across wet iron.

The lamp has been misbehaving all week. The clockwork that turns the lens has been sticking since the gale, and Mr Pardoe from the board office says he won't come out before the spring tender. So I've been up every four hours with a tin of oil and a spanner, feeling foolish, while the mainland lights wink on across the water as if they've never had a worry in their lives.
Your mother would tell me not to say it, but I will anyway: I was wrong about the crossing. You packed that cardboard case in the dark and walked down to the jetty without waiting for the boat to be properly tied, and I stood at the top of the cliff path thinking you'd be back up it by Friday. Last night I found the postcard you left on the kitchen table, the one with the gannets. On the back you'd written "She flies with her own wings", the line from Nan's old sampler that I always thought was a bit much.
The lamp is working now. I took the spring off the drive wheel, filed the burr down, and when I lit it at dusk the beam swung clean over the rocks for the first time in a fortnight. The gull watched from the rail, bored, I think. Write when you've found a room with a window that opens. He sends his regards, though I suspect he only wants the crusts.
