Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows the back of a person with auburn hair in a loose bun, with a single line of black cursive lettering across the upper back near the shoulder. The thin, flowing script reads heaven has taken my hero and is set in a gently sloping line. The photograph is in warm, low-contrast tones with a plain background and a partly visible metal earring.

Mrs Dorothy Pask had kept the lost property shelf at Calder Bridge for thirty-one years, and in that time she had learned that people left the strangest things behind: umbrellas, dentures, a wedding cake in a box, once a tortoise called Gerald. On a wet Thursday in March she was sorting a tray of gloves when the porter, young Tom Ainsley, came in with a grey tweed cap held in both hands like a bird.

"Found it on the 4.12 to Leeds," he said. "Nobody's claimed it. There's something tucked in the lining."
She turned the cap over. The something was a postcard of a seaside pier, creased soft as cloth, and on the back someone had written in pencil: Heaven has taken my hero, but I'll be on the next one out. Keep the seat warm. The postmark was 1961. Dorothy didn't recognise the hand, and she didn't recognise the name at the bottom, only the initial J.
Tom asked whether they should bin it. Dorothy said no. She carried the cap to the office window, where rain ran down the glass in long slanted lines, and set the postcard on the sill to dry. Beyond the wall, a train hissed in and the platform filled with the sound of umbrellas being shaken out. A man in a navy overcoat came in at half past five asking after a cap, and when she asked him the colour of the lining he couldn't say, so she handed it over anyway.
After he had gone she stood looking at the empty sill for a while. Then she slipped the postcard into her own coat pocket, next to her bus pass, and went out to catch the last train home.
