Script quote across upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind, with her long hair falling over one shoulder and her face not visible. A thin black cursive script in lowercase reads "i could really use a wish right now" across the upper back, with the lines set slightly staggered. The ink is black on skin, with warm, uneven sunlight striped across the shoulder and back, and the background is dark.

The ewe has been down in the lower paddock since the thaw broke, and you have walked the fence line twice before the light gives out. Your father's boots are still by the Aga where he left them, the left one split along the welt. Nobody has said his name at supper since Thursday, and nobody needs to.

The kitchen radio gives the forecast in a voice like a dropped spoon: frost by midnight, snow on the tops, ice on the lane. You fill the kettle and stand at the sink watching the yard go blue. The sodium lamp buzzes over the barn. Somewhere under the straw the new calf is shifting, and you can hear its breath through the wall, quick and thin.
Ordinarily you would not write it down, but there is a notebook on the windowsill with the feed tallies in biro, and on the back page, in pencil, you have written the thing you keep meaning to tell him. It is not a prayer exactly. Your mother would have called it a wish, the sort you make at the bottom of a well or over a candle that has already guttered. You turn the page over and look at it anyway.
When you go back out the lane is glazed and the stars are sharp as broken glass. The calf is on its feet, wobbling, nose to the ewe's flank. You kneel in the muck and wait for the ordinary miracle, which arrives without any help from you at all, and for once you are glad to be told nothing.
