Script quote along a finger
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with the fingers spread shows a handwritten script phrase, which appears to read make it count, tattooed along the length of one finger. The linework is thin and even, with the letters sitting in a straight line across the skin. The ink is a single dark tone, and the background is a blurred cream tiled floor with pink nail polish visible on two fingertips.

Mr Hollis kept a rule above the composing frame, painted in his own square capitals: EVERY SORT COSTS. He never finished the sentence, because the apprentices finished it for him, usually while reaching for a fresh box of type. Nell had been at the Gresham Street press since March and had learned to hold a stick of lead as if it might bite.

On the Friday before the Harvest Supper she set a card for the chapel notice board, a long verse about the Wrigleys' new bakery and the bell that had cracked in August. Hollis read the proof standing up, spectacles pushed into his hair, and drew a thick line through the middle two stanzas with the blunt end of a pencil.
'Make it count,' he said, and went back to his ledger. She stood there a while, then cut the verse down to what would fit, and set the rest letter by letter, backwards, the way the frame required, so the lead would print the right way round.
When the proof came off the bed she held it to the window and read it twice, once for the sense and once for the sound. Four words ran along the foot of the card, below the raffle prizes, in the smallest face in the drawer. Nobody at the supper would take them for anything but a printer's flourish, and that suited her well enough.
