Fine line black script lettering reading 'We travel not to escape life but for life not to escape us' tattooed along a forearm.

Script quote along a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A two-line quote in black cursive script runs diagonally across the forearm, reading 'We travel not to escape life but for life not to escape us'. The lettering uses fine, even strokes with a slight shadow that gives the words a little depth. The photograph is taken against a plain pale background, with the skin lit softly so the ink stands out clearly.

Dear Tom,

The motel in Tonopah has a wall of postcards nobody has bought since the nineties, and I stood reading them for twenty minutes before I admitted I was waiting for you to tell me to come home. You won't. You never could say a thing straight. I have been driving since Tuesday on a road so straight the heat folds it into a lake that is never there, and every mile I thought I was leaving Mum's kitchen behind, the radio tuned to the shipping forecast, the clock she never wound.

Somewhere past Goldfield the car started knocking and I pulled onto the shoulder beside a dead Joshua tree with a tin sign nailed to its trunk, something about a well that went dry in 1931. I sat on the bonnet and ate the last of the oranges and worked out that I had driven four hundred miles to get away from a thing that was sitting in the passenger seat the whole time. Half of me hated that. The other half laughed until the gravel rattled.

The mechanic in Beatty says it is the water pump and a day's wait. I have decided to take the day. I bought a notebook with a camel on the cover, and I am writing to you on the bed of a motel room with my shoes off, which is the most grown-up thing I have done since the funeral. I am not going to outrun her. I am going to carry her with me as far as the coast and see what the Pacific looks like from the other side.

Love, Jo
