Script quote tattoo along the side of a foot

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A black script quote reads "It was then that I carried you" in a flowing handwritten style, running diagonally across the side of a foot. The linework is fine and even, with the letters in dark black ink against pale skin. The photo is taken close up against a dark background with a gold, glittery textured surface behind the foot.

The lane was white to the gateposts by the time Dad came in from the top field, and he had a lamb under his coat, its legs hanging out like wet string. He didn't mention the cold. He put the kettle on the Rayburn and sent me upstairs for the old towel with the burn hole in it.

We had eleven ewes still to lamb that week, and the snow had drifted the hollow by the beck so deep that the Land Rover wouldn't get past the second bend. Mum went out first with the torch strapped to her head. I followed, and each time I lifted my boots the snow took them to the ankle and then let go with a sound like a cork.

Near the wall we found a ewe on her side, hardly moving. Dad knelt, reached in, and worked until his sleeves were red to the elbow. When the second lamb came it was limp, and he rubbed it hard with straw while I held my breath as if that might help. Then he stood, lifted the small thing, and held it out to me. I took it the way he'd shown me, one hand under the chest.

Walking back, he took the lamb from me again when the path steepened and said, 'Give her here, you're done in.' I hadn't realised I was. The farmhouse window was a yellow square at the end of the field, and I kept my eyes on it while his breath went up in clouds ahead of me. He never once put her down. By the time we reached the kitchen the lamb had started to shiver, which Mum said was the best sign there was.
