The tattoo shows a triangle with a circle inside it and a vertical line representing a wand, which passes through the circle and extends above the apex of the triangle. The triangle and circle are drawn with solid black outlines, while the wand is shaded in grey with small raised knots along its length. The design is centred on bare skin against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bosun had been dead nine days when Nell found the three pieces wrapped in oilcloth at the bottom of his sea chest. The drawer was swollen shut with salt, and she had to prise it with a marlinspike while the watch below snored through the bulkhead. Inside lay a triangle of pale ash cut so true she could not find the joins, a ring of the same wood, and a slim rod with five knots worked along its length like beads on a string.

Nobody aboard the Corisande had ever seen him whittle. He had spent his off-watches mending canvas and swearing at gulls, so she turned the pieces under the lamp the way she would hunt a leak, slowly and without hope. On the underside of the triangle someone had scratched a date and the letters VLP. Valparaiso. He had not set foot there since before she signed on, and she was sure of it because he had told her so, twice, usually after the rum.

On the thirteenth day out of the Horn the wind died and the sea went flat as pewter. Nell fitted the ring inside the triangle, pegged it through with the rod, and held the whole thing up to the dawn. The rod stood proud of the apex like a mast with no sail, and the shadow it threw across the deck was the same shape as the brass sextant he had taught her to read.

She put it in his hand before the sailmaker sewed him into canvas. The captain did not ask what it was, and Nell did not tell him that the wood still smelled faintly of the cedar shavings he used to wipe from his cuffs.
