Deathly Hallows symbol with Always script
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a black outlined triangle, a circle and a vertical wand line, next to the word Always in flowing cursive script, with a small lightning bolt below the word and three five-point stars above its end. The linework is solid and even in black ink, with no shading or colour. It is photographed close up on lightly freckled skin, with the design filling most of the frame.

Dai Pritchard had chalk dust in his teeth and the lamp on his cap gone dim when he found the stone with the three marks cut into it. It sat in the rubble at the foot of the number four heading, where the roof had dropped in the wet spring of 1952, and someone had scratched a triangle into its face with a nail. A circle sat inside the triangle. A straight stroke ran down through the middle of both, like a stick laid across a fence.

He turned it over in his glove. Underneath was a twist of paper gone to pulp, and when he teased it open with his thumbnail the ink had mostly run, but he could still make out the word the writer had pressed hard into it: always. The hand was his brother's. Owen had gone down the morning before the fall to fetch a spare pick and never come up again, and the company had written him off in a letter that used the word regrettable twice.
Dai did not believe in luck, nor in signs, and he told himself the zigzag scratched beneath the word was only a shotfirer's mark for a dud charge. Still, he carried the stone up the shaft in his pocket, past the tally board and the dripping lamp room, and out into a morning so bright the slag heaps looked painted on.
At the chapel gate he stopped and pressed three fingers to the cold pillar. Then he set the stone on the wall where his mam could see it from the kitchen window, and went home to tell her the pick had turned up after all.
