She had a tin of watercolours from her gran, the little pans half used, and a biro that kept skipping. Her drawing was a triangle with a circle sitting inside it and a straight line running up through the middle, all of it done in hard black. 'That's the sign for keeping things,' she said, which I did not follow, and then she made me hold the tray steady while she washed colour in behind. Green first, then yellow, then red, pushed out sideways like weather. She said the colours were for the bits that don't need to stay in the lines.

She goes home on Saturday. Before she left the bay she pressed the tin into my hand and told me to finish the blue, because she had run out of nerve for it. So I sat in the sluice room with the kettle ticking and dragged a wet brush through the blue, and it looked like sea seen through a window, which is more than I have managed in twenty years of mopping.

I have stuck the page to the fridge door with a magnet shaped like a lighthouse. I left the middle of the circle white, the way she asked, so the light has somewhere to sit. Come up at Easter and I will show you. Love, Tom.
