You climb the ninety-one iron steps with a paraffin can knocking against your knee and a box of lucifers buttoned into your coat pocket, the way your grandfather carried them for forty years before his chest gave out.

Inside the lantern room the air smells of cold brass and old oil. A pane is cracked along one bevel, and the wind comes through the gallery door with a sound like a kettle that won't boil. You strike a match. It gutters and dies. You strike another and cup it in both hands, and it dies too, and you notice your fingers have gone white at the tips and stopped doing what you ask.

Your grandfather used to say the gulls knew the weather before the glass did. Outside the cracked pane a dozen of them hang in the updraft over the rocks, wings locked, not beating, held up by nothing you can see. You watch them and think about the drop beyond the gallery rail, and the black water that takes whatever falls into it.

The third match catches. You turn up the wick, and the beam swings out across the bay and throws your own shadow up against the cloud bank, one arm flung wide, the other reaching for something above it. For a moment the shadow lifts clear of the rock and sails on over the water, and the gulls wheel after it, and you let your hands fall to your sides and laugh at yourself, alone in the light.
