The reunion was held in the Methodist hall at Stennick, because the school had been turned into flats and nobody had the nerve to ask for the gym back. Forty-one of them came in the end. Jean Coad brought a tin of Bakewell slices and a copybook she had found wedged under the stage, its cover swollen with damp. When she opened it at the back there was a line in pencil, written so many times the letters had gone grey: With faith comes hope.

Mrs Penhallow had set that line for the whole school every Monday morning, rapping the desk with her ruler until the last child had written it out twice. Nobody liked it. The fishing families of the lower town said it was a thing for people with nothing else to hold, and the boys at the back wrote it faster than anyone so they could get on to sums. Tom Rudd had written it the morning his father's boat went out past the Gull Rock and did not come back. He had written it neatly, with a small curl at the end, as if he meant to be believed.

Nobody had seen Tom since the spring he went off on a supply boat to the Shetlands. Jean read the line aloud, and the hall went quiet enough to hear the urn ticking as it cooled. Then the door opened and a man in a wet oilskin stood on the mat, dripping onto the boards. He looked at the copybook for a long time.

"You kept it," he said. Jean held it out. He turned to the page, took a stub of pencil from his breast pocket, and added a small curl at the end of the line, the same as before.
