"You have no power over me" script on thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo reads "You have no power over me" in ornate black script across the side of the thigh, with thin vines and small leaves curling between the words. Three small circular orbs with pink, blue and white shading sit among the vines, with one above the text and two below it. The lettering is bold and ornate with fine outlines, and the colour is limited to the orbs against the black ink, on pale skin in a close, slightly angled photo.

Mind the step, love, the boards go soft by the rail. You want to know about the bubbles, do you? Everyone wants to know about the bubbles. My mother sold them from a tin tray on the Margate front for forty summers, and she never once let a customer pop one with a finger.

There was a man in a grey mackintosh who came every Saturday and tried to buy the whole tray. He wanted the orbs for his mantelpiece, he said, to keep his wife's sulks in. He'd hold a bubble up to the light and tell my mother what she was thinking, and what she ought to be thinking, and which of the children she loved best. She'd say nothing. She'd just breathe into the wand, slow and even, and send another one drifting out over the grey water.
One August he reached past the counter for the tray itself. My mother lifted the wand, blew one long breath, and the bubble that came off it was the size of a cabbage. It caught the sun, pink, then blue, then white, and floated straight at his face and settled on his nose like a pair of spectacles. He could not get it off without bursting it. He stood there cross-eyed at the sea for a full minute, then walked off up the prom and never came back. You have no power over me, she told the gulls, and the gulls, being sensible birds, agreed.
