Script quote and triangle symbol on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black script quote reads "After all this time?" on the first line and "Always" on the second, with a large triangle, circle and vertical line symbol sitting between the two lines. The lettering is bold, with smooth, flowing strokes and no shading, set against pale skin and a brown fabric background. The composition is a close, straight-on view of the inner forearm, with the text running horizontally across the middle of the frame.

Now sit closer, because the fire won't carry my voice past the settle, and the wind's been at the gate all afternoon. Old Tobias Wren had three things in his coat pocket the winter his brother Amos came back up the lane after eleven years in Carlisle. A flat triangle of brass, cut from a hinge off the old cart. A round river stone with a hole worn through its middle. And a length of ash, straight as a rule, whittled down to the width of a finger.

Amos stood in the yard with snow on his hat and said, 'After all this time?' He didn't say it kindly. Tobias didn't answer him that night. He fed the ewes, mended the byre door, and left the three pieces on the kitchen table where the lamp could catch them.
It was the stone that did it, in the end. Amos picked it up, turned it against the light, and saw the hole lined up exactly with the brass point, the ash running through both like a spindle. Their father had built that arrangement once, when the boys were small, and claimed it would open the top gate on the coldest morning of the year. Nobody believed him. But the frost came down hard that night, and at dawn the gate was furred white and would not swing, so the two of them stood there laughing like children until their breath ran together in the air.
So Amos stayed for the lambing. When people in the valley ask why the Wrens never sold the top field, old Tobias says it was never the field they were guarding. He says the answer was always the same, and he'd say it now if you'd only stop fidgeting: always.
