Script quote "I love you to the moon and back"
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a two-line handwritten phrase, I Love You to the Moon and Back, in black ink on the side of the ribcage. The letters have fine, even linework in a joined cursive script, with no shading. Light skin surrounds the text, and the lace trim of a garment sits along the top of the frame.

Before the bakery lamps were lit, Hannah Dunmore pressed the words into the dough with the blunt end of a skewer. She had done it every night since her boy went to sea. She kept at it anyway, one long loaf at a time, the letters rising a little as the dough proved.

The moon was still high over the mill roof when the first tray went in. It hung above the yard like a brass dish someone had forgotten to polish. Hannah wiped her hands on her apron and told it, plainly, what she had been telling it since autumn: that her love went as far as the moon, and then further, out past the cold rim of the sky to wherever the sea had taken him.
The old women in the village said the moon heard whatever was baked into bread, because bread was the one thing that never lied about how much anyone had been given. Hannah did not know if that was true. She knew only that the loaves came out of the oven with the words standing proud and brown, and that the milk cart carried them down to the harbour road each morning.
On the forty-first morning, a lad in a salt-stiff coat climbed onto the cart and asked for a loaf for the boats. Hannah handed him one without a word. He turned it over in his hands and read the crust, then looked up at the sky, where the moon was finally sinking behind the mill. He tucked the loaf under his arm and went off down the road, and the lamps in the bakery window went out one by one.
