Script quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm shows a black script quote that reads Sometimes the right path is not the easiest one, with the words set on two lines of fine, slightly tapered strokes. The lettering is solid black with no shading, and the line weight stays even across the phrase. The arm lies over a vintage world map with postage stamps, and a black braided elastic band sits near the wrist.

Dear Ruth,

The lift in Hollins House has been broken since Monday, so I have been carrying your parcel up eleven flights with the stamps still in it, and I have only now got my breath back enough to write. Mrs Okafor on the sixth floor says the post office will hold your forwarding if you ask before Friday. I told her you would not ask. You never asked anyone for anything, not even Dad when he was leaving the second time.
Inside the tin were the stamps from his last ship, the Lisbon ones with the tram on them, and the old world map he tacked above his bed. I have pinned it above mine. Every night I trace the thin line from Liverpool down past the Cape, and I think about how he always said the right path was rarely the easy one, which is why he never once took the lift.
So I will say what I should have said on the phone. Take the job in Valparaiso. Yes, the wages are small and the school is far and the letters will take six weeks, but you have wanted this since you were nine. The council says I can have the ground floor flat by spring, and I will not be stuck on these stairs forever.
Love, Maggie
